Cows for Prisoners but Lae’s Buimo Jail Appeal for Help

As part of New Year celebrations in Lae, four cows were  taken to the Buimo Jail for prisoners to celebrate the New Year.

Huon MP, Ross Seymour, Bulolo’s Sam Basil and Governor, Kelly Naru bought the cows for the prisoners. The governor spent a few hours talking to the inmates.

There are more than 600 prisoners serving time at Buimo prison and on New Years Eve the Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru visited the prison.

He says security for Prisoners in Buimo is important, as breakouts have been happening more often. The last 12 months has been difficult, there have been at least two reported breakouts.

Those who escaped cited issues of overcrowding and poor care of prisoners. The politicians’ visit drew attention to those issues.

Jail commander Sergeant Judy Tara called on the provincial government to help rehabilitate the prison.

“A lot of Prisoners indicated to take part in rehabilitation programs but there was no funding from Provincial government,” she said.

Political attention on the jail has not always come in this manner. Usually, politicians hear about Buimo when there’s a breakout.

But on that special day the Governor was told that the prison needed a parameter fence and that more staff is needed.
