More Police Officers Assaulted

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

More than three police officers were physically assaulted at Gordon Market by members of an ethic group.

The incident occurred around 5 o’clock on Friday evening at the market. The Gordon police station Commander Mark Monisakave said his men were on duty when they were assaulted.

“The market vendors threw coconuts and kaukau at my men,” said Monisakave.

He said no serious injuries were obtained but that kind of behaviour was uncalled for.

“My men were attacked whilst being on official duty”, Monisakave said.

It is not clear why the officers were assaulted, however it is believed the assault was linked to the demolishment of the informal market by police on the previous day.

Two suspects involved in the assault have been apprehended and they are now at the holding cell at Gordon police station.

Despite the threats from the public, police presence will be visible at Gordons. Monisakave said he will not be intimated by the threats and police officers will continue to patrol the market area.
