Council of Public Servants Union: Don’t Lie To Public Servants

By Adelaide Kari – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Council of Public Servants Union (COPSU) is calling on the government to stop giving misleading information to the public and government workforce, by stating that the country is not broke and that fortnightly payments have been paid.

This comes after fortnightly salaries for public servants were delayed this week, with many still yet to receive their salaries.

The delay in fortnightly payment for public servants has been a sight for concern and COPSU says that reports that the pay was delayed because of technical issues is utter nonsense and the government needs to come out and tell the truth.

The chairlady of COPSU, Emma Faiteli, said that when workers of the government are not paid it is a national disaster as the repercussions are far reaching.

She said that there would be social and economic disorder and the government must be held accountable for such disasters.

When asked if public servants would go on strike COPSU responded by asking how does the government expect people to go to work on empty stomachs?

Faiteli said the council is calling on the government to give priority to its workers, as they are the drivers of development agenda and policy implementations.
