It’s a Chinese Dragon dance with a Papua New Guinea flavor.
The dancers who led this year’s traditional Chinese New Year’s Dragon dance in the Nation’s Capital were young Papua New Guineans.
As is the norm in Chinese traditions, the young dancers graced the entrance of business houses bringing good fortune for the year.
Among business houses like the Waterfront and J-Mart, the dragon and lion dancers visited Food World today to rid of their demons and bring good fortune.
Despite the persistent rainy weather in the nation’s capital today, the young dancers displayed an enthusiastic performance.
Robin Seeto, a long-time Chinese resident of Papua New Guingea, dedicated his time to teaching the dragon dance.
Unlike the Lion Dance, the Dragon dance is normally performed dominantly by Chinese and took up to three months to master.
The young Papua New Guineans, who’d caught on in only three weeks, were proud to have been the pioneers of a Papua New Guinean dominated dragon dance.
The dancers hoped that this would strengthen ties between the Chinese and Papua New Guinean communities.
