Budget for PNG Games

By Lorraine Genia – EMTV Sport, Port Moresby

Executive Director of the PNG Sport Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr., confirmed the government’s support of K5 million for the hosting of the seventh PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain province.

The West New Britain province, however, have pledged their support of K20 million to the Host Organising Committee, which will cover venues, operations, accommodation and transportation during the two weeks of the games.

“It was promised we’d get K10 million from the national government through the sports foundation, obviously that hasn’t come through, but West New Britain has passed its budget for the province, and of course a lot of allocations and funding will come from the West New Britain Government,” said Operations Manager, Freddie Matthies.

Matthies has highlighted the construction of infrastructure is their biggest concern, and focus for now, with the majority of funding from both the national government and provincial government to go towards the completion of all venues.

Executive Director of the PNG Sport Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr., told EMTV – K1 million will be spent on the technical aspect of the games, leading into the month of November.

“From the national government we’ll be giving K5 million, with a million of that going straight to the infrastructure,” said Tsiamalili.

Regardless of the budget cut, an announcement regarding the official sponsorship of the PNG Games is expected soon with additional funding likely to boost this bi-annual event.
