Safe New Year In Paris

by Lorraine Gabina – EM TV International, Port Moresby

The Paris attacks in November 2015 left Paris and the world shaken.

However, the fear of terror attacks did not stop a successful welcome of the New Year in the city.

Paris revelers congregated at the city’s Champs Elysees to witness a projected New Year’s Eve light show on Thursday, December 31 2015.

With memories of the November 13 attacks which killed 130 still quite fresh, city authorities cancelled the fireworks and shortened the planned show, calling for an atmosphere of “sobriety and togetherness.”

A tourist from Houston, United States, Kay Akinmade, said, “I feel very fine. There’s a lot of security present here and the crowd has been great, everybody has been in a good mood so far so it’s nice to be here.”

Security was escalated in the city with over 2000 personnel deployed in Paris. There was a lot of positive energy and cooperation from the crowd.
