Suspects Caught in Bulolo Drug Bust

by Sylvester Gawi – EM TV, Lae

Two men from Bulolo, Morobe province, were arrested this morning for marijuana trafficking into Lae city.

One of them is a suspect on the run, for armed robbery and the alleged killing of a construction worker at the Kumalu bypass project.

They were tracked from Bulolo to Lae, and were in possession of a kilogram of freshly harvested marijuana drugs.

At around 10am today, members of the Mobile Squad 13, based in Lae rounded the two men at Lae’s highway bus stop.

Both men were brought in for questioning at the Lae central police station and were later detained.

“We were informed by a reliable source that the suspects were travelling by PMV into Lae. We held and searched them and found the marijuana in their possession,” says Constable Sailas Kapen.

Marijuana cultivation is a growing problem in Bulolo district.

Police manpower shortage is said to be the biggest problem along the Bulolo highway; marijuana trafficking into Lae and other districts has increased in the previous months.

“Marijuana grows well in Bulolo because the place is cold,” said the police.

The increasing number of marijuana cultivation in rural areas and even in towns like Lae and Goroka have became a business for many people.

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil, has blamed the National Government’s negligence on bringing tangible developments into rural communities, which resulted in people turning to illegal means for income generation.
