Serve National Interests, Say Trade Unions

By Sasha Silovo – EMTV Online

Trade unions in the Solomon Islands have been urged to continue to protect and promote the interests of local workers. This call was made by Tony Kagovai, the National Secretary of the Solomon Islands National Council of Trade Unions (SICTU).

Solomon Star reports that Kagovai made these remarks while welcoming the new president-elect of the Workers Union of Solomon Islands (WUSI).

He said that the country faced immense challenges when dealing with both locals and foreigners who are more concerned about their own interests rather than priorit’sing on the wellbeing of the country and that of future generations.

He added that trade unions must also protect investors who are crucial to the economy.

“Investors are so crucial to the economy life of this country especially export oriented investors because they are crucial to making sure our foreign reserves are healthy and we are in a position to trade with other countries,” Kagovai said.

“We must also do whatever is legal, legitimate and morally right to protect Solomon Islands and genuine investors whenever we feel that they are unfairly targeted.”
