PMV Buses in Port Moresby Will Run

By Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Chief Inspector Benjamin Turi, held talks with PMV operators yesterday at Unagi Oval in Port Moresby to discuss their grievances, before urging them to resume normal bus services.

Chief Inspector Turi said police will beef up security across city corridors to calm the current situation and maintain law and order in the city.

The aftermath of the recent Gordons riot between two warring factions from the Highlands has prompted PMV operators to go on strike after opportunists stoned windscreens of their buses and taxis.

Yesterday, bus owners mostly from the Western Highlands province, went on strike forcing hundreds of the travelling public to walk to work.

Bus operators impounded their vehicles at the Unagi Oval in Port Moresby to discuss their grievances and demanded the government pay compensation in light of the damages done to their buses.

Turi, who was present with several police units at the scene, held discussions with bus drivers to solve the matter.

He urged bus owners to continue operating bus services in the city saying that even though PMV buses have owners they are public motor vehicles that are bound to provide transport to the travelling public.

After discussions continued, bus drivers have consented to resume bus services under conditions that their demands be met.
