Lights Off for Earth Hour 2016

“Earth Hour is not about how much energy is saved during the hour. Rather, it’s a chance to put the spotlight on the issues facing the planet, and to inspire millions across the world to live more sustainably.” – WWF

As people the world over face the effects of climate change, WWF has made it an annual responsibility to fight climate change by celebrating Earth Hour.

It’s commemorated at the end of March and today, we mark Earth Hour from 8.30PM to 9.30PM local time.

The hour long mass movement, bringing people together to protect the planet, started in 2007.

Initially, it was a lights-off occurrence, beginning in Sydney Australia where 2,000 businesses and 2.2 million individuals turned their lights off for a whole hour.

You may ask, How does turning off lights help protect our planet? Turning off lights and/or reducing energy consumption can help significantly in reducing the effects of global warming. Doing so also shows your support in the global campaign against climate change.

Lights that aren’t essential and those that don’t affect public safety are the ones that are recommended to be switched off.

The, now worldwide movement, has leaped further in doing other activities, other than just switching off lights.

This year, WWF-UK invit’s people to make sure food ordered, cooked or eaten is healthy for them and for the planet as well.

In France, they intend to switch off the lights of the Eiffel Tower and continue the social awareness of Earth Hour.

People living in Hong Kong pledge to learn how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle relating to clothing, food consumption and even entertainment.

You can participate by switching off lights that aren’t needed at home, doing social awareness about Earth Hour, or join Earth Hour campaigns in your local community.

There’s always more to do to help protect the future of our planet, but you can make the first move to turn off those lights.
