It has been more than a year since Papua New Guinean journalists started reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of disseminating accurate information to the masses has not been easy.
One of the biggest challenges has been to deal with misinformation and disinformation.
These were two of the things discussed by Lae based journalists and reporters, recently in a media workshop.
The Covid-19 Information Integrity workshop they recently took part in was aimed at discussing the challenges faced with reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Post Courier reporter, Janet Kari said one of the issues has been accessing accurate information from the provincial authorities to report on, amidst efforts to dispel fake news.
Also present were the Chairman of People with Disabilities, Benedict Hipom, and representatives from the NGO, Femili PNG. They discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic was affecting PWD’s and the increase of domestic violence cases during the pandemic.
The workshop was organized by ABC’s Media Development Initiative and funded by the International Foundation of Electoral System or IFES.
It provided an avenue for Lae journalists to share information, as well as get feedback from NGOs and PWD’s, and ways forward in reporting stories on COVID-19.
