The second phase of polio vaccination in the National Capital District is currently underway.
The administering of the second phase of the Supplementary Polio Immunisation has started today in the urban clinics in Port Moresby, and will continue for the next two weeks into other centres.
Nursing officer with NCD Health Services, Sister Sheila Sete, said that the polio vaccine is compulsory and will be administered to all children from ages one to fifteen.
“It is a must that we must give it to the children from six months to eleven months, and then from one year to 5 years,” she said.
The clinics have trained volunteers to help administer the vaccine to children.
“We have teams that are going out to the settlements, the bus stops and to where the crowds are, so that we can vaccinate all the children,” Sete said.
Mothers have been urged to ensure that their children get immunised against polio.
