Participants Challenged on Building Sustainable Infrastructure

By Staycey Yalo – EMTV News, Port Moresby

As a case study for the Southern Region Sustainable Development Plan, participants of the UN SDG’s workshop from Northern, Central and Milne Bay provinces were taken down to the Government Wharf at Alotau where Professor Chalapan Kaluwin challenged the provincial reps on building infrastructure in a sustainable manner.

The government wharf at Alotau was built 50 years ago.

Professor Kaluwin told the participants, Papua New Guineans must be able to work and build on ideas using the resources they already have.

He said a lot of times, Papua New Guineans rely on foreigners or developers to do things which they themselves can do. He also said provincial governments now must look at building infrastructure that will withstand natural disasters and also last for a long time.

He added that sustainable development not only focuses on the environment but also the infrastructure.
