After 22 years of producing homebrew and trading marijuana, youth at Port Moresby’s Momase 8-mile Block have rescinded their illicit activities.
A ceremony was held yesterday as youth vowed to stop illegal activities and declare a drug-and-homebrew free zone. The youth hope to help curb crime and take ownership of developments in their zone.
The Zone 5A Momase Development Association in cooperation with youth are devising ways members can find to eke out a honest and responsible living. With the surrender of the brewing equipment and vows to stop other illegal activities, the youth want a more proactive approach by leaders for vocational skills training or community contracts along major road developments in their area.
Police were also invited to witness the program. Sergeant Dami Siwi told youth, maintenance of law and order within the city was everyone’s responsibility.
Women in the community, often victims of youth harassment, were relieved and say it is a step forward for change.
