Some parts of Chimbu Province in the highlands region have been facing continuous power outages for the past several weeks.
This is a result of frustrated locals cutting trees directly onto towers and power lines, over outstanding tower base payments.
PNG Power CEO Chris Bais spoke to EMTV in Port Moresby about how PPL is addressing this issue.
He said from records prior to the construction of tower they normally paid tower base which are government rates.
“Trees and food crops are also paid on government rates,” he added.
Normally they engage villager leaders to discuss with land owners together with police to restore power.
“It’s an ongoing challenge and PPL is taking a bold stance in addressing,” Bais said.
