UNDP Acknowledges Media To Drive Sustainable Development

by Delly Waigeno – EM TV New, Port Moresby

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has acknowledged the important role of the media in driving sustainable development and improving people’s lives.

UNDP in PNG has therefore set out to organise a Media Club.

The aim is to provide journalists with more in-depth information on the global goals for sustainable development.

The UNDP Media Club is a dedicated meeting of media representatives and UNDP experts on a particular topic.

The aim of the club is also to inform the media on the development issues UNDP and the Government is working on.

Today’s topic was Sustainable Development Goals: Make it a Reality.

It drew on the experiences from the MDG-acceleration program implemented in four communities across PNG, and how these experiences can be used to achieve the SDGs.

UNDP said Papua New Guinea hears a lot about the need for the country to take on sustainable development and create changes for better lives.

Among a few pilot countries, over 3,000 people in PNG gave their views and needs for development through country-wide consultations.

As a result came 17 new Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

The next move is for governments (national and sub national), private sector, development partners, NGO’s and Civil Societies to work together to achieve these SDGs.
