Supplier Advise City Residents To Use Water Wisely

by Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The ongoing dry weather has taken its toll in Port Moresby and the only water supplier, Eda Ranu, has appealed to city residents to control their use of water.

Less than 50 per cent of water now remains at the Sirinumu Dam outside Port Moresby, and the water supplier is urging city residents to conserve their water use.

The El Nino conditions are worsening at this time of the year, when the country is normally expecting regular falls of rain.

Eda Ranu Chief Executive Officer, Henry Mokono, said over 50 per cent of the dam has already been used up.

He said the remaining water at the reservoir is expected to last for another ten months, that of course being if city residents start to use water wisely.

He appealed to residents in Port Moresby, the Motu Koitabu villages and settlers at the fringes of the city to preserve water and use it wisely.

“Those using hoses to wash vehicles must stop. Running taps must be fixed and illegal connections must be reported,” Mokono said.

The CEO said they will start water rationing if El Nino conditions continue and people refuse to follow advice.
