Southern Highlands Couple Victims of Police Brutality

by Merilyn Diau-Katam – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Police Internal Investigation Unit are investigating the assault of a couple by police officers.

The incident occurred over the weekend at Makana in 9 mile, outside Port Moresby.

The couple reported the matter to the Internal Investigation Unit at Badili Police Station.

One of the victims, thirty year old, Betty Bokea from Ialibu, Southern Highlands, was at her home at the Makana Settlement when she was attacked.

She sustained serious injuries to her left eye, right ear, and was dragged through the mud by two men she claims were police officers.

It is understood, Betty was attacked because of a car payment issue involving the buyer.

Though the matter is before the court, the attacker wanted Betty and her husband to repay the K6,000 he claims they owe him.

There was an agreement in place; however, the attacker was persistent to get the payment.

The victim’s husband, Rodney Yalura, also from Southern Highlands, was in bed when he was attacked by the men.

Betty’s husband sustained injuries to his head from a brick he was hit with.

The couple have called on the Police to conduct a full scale investigation into the attack, and want the law to be enforced on the perpetrators.
