The orchid and floriculture in Papua New Guinea is said to be an untapped sleeping industry.
This is according to mothers from the different provincial orchid groups or Associations who traveled to the city, to attend the week-long orchid show in Port Moresby.
As today was the last day, they brought some of their handy-work to parliament to present to all the Provincial Governors.
These cheerful groups of women were outside parliament house, holding with them lovely decorated orchid and flower bundles, skillfully arranged. This is an art work that has yet to be developed and perhaps show-cased extensively in the international market.
As parliament session was still on, these women representatives from all the Provincial Centers waited outside to present the gifts to the respective Provincial Governors. It was also a chance to promote their art-work with hopes to lobby support to develop the potential orchid and floriculture industry.
Maureen Duwang, who is actively involved in the Floriculture industry in the Northern Province, was part of the group outside parliament house. She said the floriculture industry was an unrealised sleeping industry. If given the necessary support from the government, she says, the industry may bloom extensively.
The presentations of the orchids were also in line with Mother’s Day, to be commemorated this weekend.
