The demand for locally sown ‘meri-blouses’ in Madang Province is growing with more women engaging in this thriving business. An Entrepreneur in Madang, Delvin Namor, says the demand is encouraging women to participate in the sector to generate income for their families.
Delvin Namor who is from East Sepik Province learnt the skill through the art of self-taught. She sells her own meri-blouses to other women; everyday she receives orders from women who want their blouses sewn, stating that there is a huge demand now in Madang.
Given the economic crises and tight budgets that most families have, Delvin’s prices range just between K15 to K30.
Like many other local women entrepreneurs in Madang, she is hopeful that authorities would provide an avenue for women to market their products as there are no designated venues for women to use and at the moment they are all forced to use the main town market to sell their handiwork.
