Lae Games Venues Awaiting Upgrade

Ninety-two days remain in the countdown towards the PNG Games and most sporting venues in Lae are still waiting to be upgraded.

The Lae Basketball Court is one sporting facility that is in dire need of renovation work.

While support is said to be on its way, the facility continues to fall apart. The Lae Basketball Court has been the breeding ground for many basketball players in PNG.

It was where legends were born and stars were made. However, the facility will soon become history if no support is given on time.

A group of volunteers have been looking after the facility, ensuring it is ready on weekends to host the local basketball games.

As the PNG Games approach, the facility requires major upgrading and renovation works to be done.

The basketball courts need major resurfacing works, lighting and ablution facilities to meet international standards.

Right next to the basketball court are the volleyball courts and the Eriku oval, which have also been waiting to be upgraded.

In the last two months, only the Sir Ignatius Kilage stadium has seen improvements.

The PNG Games Organizing Committee has put much of the blame on the delay of funding support from the national government.

The question has been whether the venues will be ready on time to host the PNG Games.
