The international highway between Indonesia, and Vanimo, has been cut off after the collapse of a bridge near Vanimo town in West Sepik Province.
Daunda Bridge – one of the oldest bridges in the West Coast of Vanimo collapsed earlier this morning after heavy down pour in the last two days.
The damaged bridge has affected thousands living along the coastal villages of Lido, Waromo, Yako, Musu and the border village of Wutung.
Villagers will now be forced to travel by boat to Vanimo town which is more expensive then road transport. It has also cut off Vanimo Town from the International Border.
Meanwhile ,the people are calling on the National Government to build more permanent bridges and do away with log bridges that are easily damaged by heavy rains.
Works are currently underway to fix the collapse bridge.
