East New Britain Police Accommodation to Get Upgraded

PNG Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, will officiate at a ground-breaking ceremony for new police accommodation in East New Britain province tomorrow.

The Police commissioner is also expected to visit various parts of the province including a remote mobile squad base along the New Britain Highway, and a proposed location for a new police training academy at Makurapau on the outskirts of Kokopo town.

East New Britain Acting Provincial Police Commander, Senior Inspector Joseph Tabali, says the commissioner will also be given a walk through at the Kokopo Police Barracks, which has been left rundown for many years.

The facelift in the police accommodation comes at a time as Kokopo is changing from a town into a city and its police manpower needs to be strengthened.

East New Britain has been dubbed the “Regional Capital” for the New Guinea Islands Region, and can be accessed by road, sea and air mode of transports.

This is expected to generate a large influx of people moving into the province, making policing a big concern for the police force in the province.
