Capital City Quiet on First Public Holiday of 2015

By Judith Kasek – EM TV, Port Moresby

The New Year started with a quiet and slow day today in the nation’s capital, after heavy police operations last night.

The busy roads and streets were quiet, bus services were not as busy today and many shops were closed for the public holiday.

After many celebrations held throughout the city to welcome the new year, today was a very quiet day for many city residents, business houses and bus operators.

The usually-congested city roads had zero traffic jams, while majority of shops were closed with only a few open for business.

After a very busy night for almost all the city residents and the police, main shopping areas in the city were deserted.

Bus operators had a slow start to the year with only few passengers choosing to travel.

In reflection, the Christmas and New Year period was relatively quiet with a decrease in road and alcohol-related incidents reported to police in Port Moresby.
