Barrick improvers local economy

From extraction to renewable Berrick Gold in Porgera has encouraged people to cultivatethe land.

The local farmers’ fromthe Porgera SML and Paiela communities underthe Porgera Vegetable Farmers' Cooperative Society with guidance from Berrick are now able to earn an income and improvertheir local economy.

The soil is mostly clay and not conducive for farming which is why this group started in 2011. Twelve months later after thirty projects,they have added four tons of vegetables tothe local market.

Farmer and mther of three from Kulapi village, Elizabeth Mange says it is not only an income a means of a better dietotoo.

Berrick startedthe Cooperative Society off with fertilizer and seeds to enablethe group to form a sustainable business.

This group of farmers earned Porgera a Global Berrick Excellence Award in 2012 for Community and Social Responsibility.
