In an exclusive interview with EM TV yesterday, Prime Minister Peter O&rsquO’Neill announced the government’s assistance of K1 million for evacuation needs, following the Mt Tavurvur eruption.
This afternoon the Chief Secretary to government, Sir Manasupe Zurenouc, said the East New Britain Provincial Disaster Office will take the lead in coordinating the exercise.
All state agencies, including police, works and health, have all been notified to be on standby after an emergency meeting with all stakeholders in Port Moresby.
Sir Manasupe said the national government is confident the Provincial Disaster Office will carry out the task, given the fact that it had the past experience with managing the 1994 eruptions.
He said the situation on the ground is quiet; however, only experts can predict if there are chances of escalation.
