City Police Assault Family

by Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A 22 year old woman, her husband and two other family members were assaulted by police, robbed and their vehicle windscreen smashed.

The incident happened in front of the National Development Bank (NDB) compound at nine mile, north of Port Moresby.

Lawyer representing the four victims, Christopher Jaminen, has condemned the attack saying the police actions were not according to the constitution and human rights laws.

“The way in which the police are dealing with allegations of criminal behaviour is totally contrary to the constitution and laws governing Human Rights.

“The incident happened just after the Human rights campaign week and the police actions are shameful,” the Principal of the Jaminan and Associates Lawyers said.

Calls are made for NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi, and the police management to investigate the matter and deal with rogue officers.

The four were allegedly assaulted by police last Saturday 5th December, at around 2am.

After a family gathering with deputy principle of Port Moresby Technical College, Henry Wamaingu, at his residence, Emmanuel Kasi, a final year law student at the University of Papua New Guinea drove Richard Maninjembi, an employee of NASFUND and Bradley Wamaingu and his wife Stelcy Winga to the NDB compound, former Cloudy Bay compound at nine mile.

At the gate, the police officers who had been chasing a suspected stolen vehicle, mistakenly punched the four, all the while swearing at them, before they damaged the windscreen of Richard’s vehicle.

The suspected stolen vehicle has the same description, and was travelling the same road.

The victims stated they tried to explain, but were instead labelled as thieves and continually punched by the policemen.

The victims claimed that two shots were fired.

Police officers in the ten seater vehicle plate number ZPC 237 D-Shift, searched the four victims and took their mobile phones and cash money of K1,650.

After detaining them at the Boroko cell for over ten hours, they were released without being charged.

Their money and mobile phones were not returned.

They have filed a complaint with the Police Internal Unit.
