Opposition Calls for Commission of Inquiry

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The opposition have called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into recent reports of money laundering in Papua New Guinea.

Opposition Leader Don Polye said the report revealed by SBS Dateline shows that there is a clear level of corruption happening here through PNG.

Polye said the O’Neill-Dion government must react immediately to these claims, as it is potentially taxpayer’s money which is being laundered overseas.

The opposition leader also questioned the government on contracts which have been awarded to overseas based companies.

“The opposition believe large amounts of public funds are also being laundered through government contracts,” Polye said.

Polye also urged the Australian government and the Australian Federal Police to investigate these money laundering claims.

The opposition also questioned the delay to establish the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) and the appointment of a Chief Ombudsman.

“A Chief Ombudsman must be appointed soon, because it’s in the constitution of the country,” Polye said.
