While many welcomed the New Year, policemen and women across the country were out on the streets patrolling and making sure everyone welcomed the New Year with safe and trouble free celebrations.
In the Nation’s Capital police were out in full swing, ensuring there was peace and restraining law breakers.
The operations started with a convoy around the city signifying and informing the public that police would be out in full force to make sure everyone abides by the laws and that the liquor ban is imposed.
Road blocks were set up in various parts of the city to make sure there was no drink driving and transporting of alcohol.
Vehicles and drivers were also checked for registration and licences.
Those caught were locked up and charged.
Metropolitan Commander NCD, Andy Bawa, was also out patrolling with his men.
Assistant Commissioner Port Moresby Police, Jim Andrews, thanked his men and the general public for a peaceful festive season so far.
It was a peaceful New Year for most city residents with one or two major and minor incidents, mostly from the settlement areas.
A man sustained knife wounds to his neck and face after a confrontation with his in-laws at 2 Mile Hill.
According to police reports a boy was stabbed at Morota, there was a rape case at Kaugere with one suspect being apprehended and detained by Badili police. There were also cases of violence, assault and stealing.
Tyers were also burnt on the roads causing inconvenience for drivers just after 12 o’clock.
Apart from all that most city residents packed in and around the Lamana Gold Club to count down the last minutes of 2013 and witness the spectacular fireworks display.
