A United States Navy Ship has arrived in Port Moresby to assist in providing security during the APEC Leaders and CEO meetings in Port Moresby.
USS Green Bay arrived yesterday, and will be used to assist in transporting marines as well as equipment and other necessities to and from land.
The USS Green Bay is the second US ship to visit PNG, since the USS Michael Murphy DDG 12 visited Port Moresby, earlier last month.
The Naval ship, upon providing marine security capability, will be used to deploy marines, transport supplies and equipment, and to fly UH-1Y Huey helicopters as part of its security operations during the APEC Leaders and CEO Summit.
US Navy Commander for the Amphibious Force of the Seventh Fleet, Rear Admiral Brad Cooper, ensures that the ship will show its support to provide security during APEC.
This vessel was commissioned by the US Navy in 2009, and is based in its home port of Sasebo, in Japan, as part of Commander Amphibious Force 7th Fleet.
Currently, the ship holds about 500 sailors and marines on board to assist in providing security and support needed for APEC.
USS Green Bay Commanding Officer, Captain Tom Shultz, expresses his gratitude, whilst highlighting the capabilities of the ship.
The name of the ship has ties to the City of Green Bay, Wisconsin in the United States, with the crew having ties to Green Bay’s professional football team, the Green Bay Packers.
USS Green Bay will be collaborating with the other international and national military and naval security forces already in Port Moresby, to assist in providing security during APEC.
