Boxing Association reviving the sport in NCD

By Staycey Yalo – EMTV Sports, Port Moresby

The National Capital District Boxing Association is on a mission to revive boxing in the city after going through difficult times following the resignation of its president in 2016.

The association started with a sparring competition this week featuring 50 male and female fighters displaying their skills before selectors at Lamana Hotel.

The sparring exhibition saw fighters from six NCD boxing clubs. 13 clubs less than what it used to be, before the resignation of NCD Boxing Association President, Honk Kiap.

NCD Boxing Head Coach, Mark Keto, told EMTV News their biggest challenge is finding referees and judges for competitions.

Despite this, the competition saw 50 fighters, from cadets to professionals, displaying their skills for selectors as part of a two-week preparation program for the upcoming national championships.

The whole aim of the sparring exhibition and other activities that have been lined up, is to bring back the code of boxing in the city.

Tournament Director, Dick Larry, says the sparring is for selectors to pick their best fighters to make up Team NCD for the upcoming national championships.
