Surfing Association of PNG to Run Expression Session Event

With 44 professional surfers on home turf, the Surfing Association of PNG (SAPNG) will have the opportunity to run a different event parallel to a World Surf League event, where locals will use traditional wooden boards to compete against the world’s best surfers.

This unique event will be used to empower locals to see the importance of using sustainable methods by using natural resources.

SAPNG President, Andrew Abel, said reviving the use of wooden boards that SAPNG is adopting from Hawaii, is something PNG will emulate into the future. Abel said, SAPNG has been able to donate surfboards to its affiliated clubs from donations made by individual Australian surfers and associations.

The expression session event won’t have any incentives for the winners, but is aimed more at promoting the use of wooden splinter boards, made from natural resources.
