The 15th Correctional Service Commanders and Senior Management Conference was held last Friday in Kerevat, East New Britain Province.

It is an annual, important event in the CS calendar where officers refine their yearly work plan and the challenges they encountered. This year’s conference was based on the theme, “The Success in PNG CS is Driven by the Power of Unity”.

Officers meet with their senior managers to refine yearly work plans to effectively carry out their duties to rehabilitate the prisoners.

CS Minister, Jim Simatab was present to officially open the meeting.

Commanders were told to manage the jails to a higher expectation and be pro-active in establishing relationship with stakeholders.

One of the agendas discussed was the CS Rehabilitation Program and the policy on Institutional Reforms.

The reform is aimed at enhancing efficiency and improvement of roles in the Law and Justice Sector.

It is crucial for the modernization of CS in terms of its powers, functions, and practices and how they engage others in the delivery of their services.

Plans and procedures were also set to reduce K23 million debts from years 2012 and 2013.

A Prison Service Charter was also presented. It is a survey on the topic, ‘Dealing with dilemmas and difficult people’. Detainees’ views were also collected.

A total of 20 commanding officers and members of the CS executive team, including the CS Commissioner, Michael Waipo, attended the two day event.
