It’s been reported that tuberculosis has been brought under control in South Bougainville.
Health authorities in Buin carried out awareness and door to door treatment, after seeing a steady increase in TB cases since 2008.
Records showed an alarming annual increase, over five years.
Health authorities on the ground, couldn’t provide the statistics, but reported that they were treating more cases at the health center.
Buin District Health Centre was established in 1960, serving the over 39, 000 people in that area.
TB is reportedly now under control, but there’s still a risk, says Bernadette Kakata, a nursing officer. And with more awareness being conducted at the villages, statistics have improved.
The Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) or doctors without borders assistance, a French NGO, have been recognized in terms of health care and human resources.
Now with the service been provided at Arawa, this will ease the problem of mothers with pregnancy complications, traveling to Buka to access the services.
