Study to Develop Proper Measures to Boost Textile and Garment Industry

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

A study into the garment and textile industry will be headed by the Small Medium Enterprise Corporation as directed by the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Hon. Richard Maru.

The objective of the study is to put into place appropriate measures and policies that will drive towards cutting down on import bills and also to produce high quality clothing to meet the increasing demand.

The country known to locally produce rice, vegetables, dairy products and garment and clothing, can also boost its textile and garment industry if appropriate measures are implemented to drive the industry forward.

Demand for clothes is growing as the market is fragmented into different areas of quality and affordability.

SME and the Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry, in its effort to boost the industry, has initiated the textile and garment training program offered by the Women’s Textile Training Program. So far, many have graduated from this training and have ventured into the small clothing businesses.

However, one of the primary challenges many of these women face is proper markets to sell their products.

During the 27th Textile and Garment training graduation last Friday, Mr Richard Yakam, First assistant secretary from the Trade Division, Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry said there are policies in place however, they need political will and drive to see better outcomes such as the one offered by the Women’s Textile Training Centre.

“With this study at hand, we will identify barriers and existing policies and help recommend for appropriate measures and policies that will support to grow the industry in the country.”
