Sparrows Fly High

The Digicel Sparrows are crowned queens of the 2014 Port Moresby Netball Tournament.

They belted Monier Paramana 46-36 at the Koroboro International School netball court yesterday, taking away the title.

The Koroboro International School netball court accommodated the finale showdown of the two best teams in the premier division who made the final cut for the season.

Monier Paramana Club has been in existence for about 30 years, producing quality netball players since its inception. Sparrows, on the other hand, won’t deny the fact of having the service of former international Julienne Leka- Maliaki.

Paramana in black and white took the court under the captainship of PNG Pepes’ Gasi Moka, while the Sparrows boasted on coach Lawrence Lahari and David Aua.

Sparrows fired up right from the start and the inclusion of PNG Pepes representative, Jeperth Tulapi in GA position, was a thriller. Paramana were heavily banking on Iamo sisters in the wing attacks while the PNG representative Shana Dringo made sure to put up a strong defence.

Sparrows Captain Kilala Owen disappointed the Paramanas scoring opportunity, dismissing settings from Gasi Moka. Sparrows pocketed the first quarter 13-8.

Paramana were determined to make up for it in the second quarter as they sped their passes, providing Ottio, at the shooting area, to snatch baskets for baskets. Sparrows GS player Julienne Leka- Maliaki’s combination with lanky GA player Jeperth Tulapi, sent Paramana off 29-12 in the second half.

The pressure mounted on Paramana side as they hoped to snatch the third and final quarter but finally the Sparrows, who defeated Snax Mermaids in the semi-final, bagged 38-24 in third quarter, leaving as winners with a whopping 46-36 at the final hooter.
