Simberi MoA Review, LO’s push for Agendas

Wealth creation, investment funds and a scholarship program are among agendas being pushed bythe landowners atthe Simberi MOA review meeting in New Ireland.

The meeting in Kavieng will go for a week.

Parties tothe MoA arethe State, New Ireland Provincial GovernmentoSentral Niu Ailand Local Level GovernmentoSimberi Mining Area Association andthe Simberi Gold Company.

The meeting concernsthe Simberi Oxide Gold Project inthe volcanic highlands onthe eastern side ofthe Simberi Island.

Gold production started in February 2008 but mining was suspended in 2009 after its developer Alllied Gold received a cease work order fromthe Mineral Resources Authority over local landholder issues.

Mining has since recommenced.

The roundtable meeting currently underway proposes to fine tune some ofthese issues on benefits including wealth creation, Simberi Future Generations &Investment Funds and a scholarship program amongst thers.

The State and developer presented reports to a sub committee comprisingthe Simberi Mining Area Association andthe State agencies includingthe Mineral Resources Authority. The sub committee was formed to reviewthe MoA.

The New Ireland Provincial Government andthe Sentral Niu Island Local Level Government hopethe MoA captures all parties’ concerns.

This MoA will be reviewed next month andthen submitted tothe State Solicitors Office for review and legal clearance beforethe National Executive Council for approvers it.
