Despite all the happenings in the country at present, Papua New Guinea students overseas carried their flag proudly at the recent International Cultural Festival in China.
Held on May 14, 15 PNG students from different parts of the country united to create an exhibition portraying the country’s culture.
The many colourful cultures of Papua New Guinea were proudly showcased at the ninth International Cultural Festival held at the Tianjin University in Tianjin Province, China.
Students said the turnout from the PNG community living in China was unexpectedly generous, showing a true spirit of patriotism for PNG.
Among those who turned up to support were the Second Secretary (Immigration and Consular) Wellington Navasivu and his family, the wife and family of Vincent Somale, Deputy Ambassador of PNG to China, as well as other PNG students studying in Beijing.
15 students from the Tianjin University participated in the cultural performances that drew a good crowd despite a bit of downpour.
The students also put together an exhibition of face painting and traditional costumes that attracted Chinese nationals, who even sought to buy some of the artifacts put on display.
A student said the university was so impressed with the proud display of culture that it has requested the students exhibit again next year.
The students described the experience as a proud one, despite all the happenings back home. They counted it a privilege to carry the red, black, white and gold flag on foreign soil.
