En route back to PNG after the Peru APEC summit, Prime Minister O’Neill, also made an official visit to Cuba. This was upon the invitation of the Cuban President, Raul Castro, brother of former president and revolutionist, the Late Fidel Castro.
The pair discussed healthcare options for PNG’s health sector. This will be addressing the problem currently being faced by rural communities on the shortage of doctors in their health centers or clinics.
Prime Minister O’Neill was joined by Health Minister Michael Malabag and Secretary, Pascoe Kase to discuss the stop-over visit to Cuba.
PM O’Neill spoke confidently of the agreement made with Cuba’s health officials. He said, though it is temporary, it is expected to impact the PNG health sector positively. Papua New Guinean interns will then take over from the Cuban doctors when the deal comes to a close.
