Lae’s Bumbu Police Barracks Housing Program that began in 2012 to address the chronic housing problem faced by the constabulary, has continued to achieve poor results, three years on.
The houses remain incomplete and Police Minister, Robert Atiyafa, says he is waiting for a report from the police commissioner to initiate an investigation into the construction project.
The seven duplexes that were supposed to have helped with the long-standing housing shortages that the Lae Police face, remain incomplete.
The initial cost of the project was 2.5 million kina, but that will have increased since the implementation of project in 2012.
Papua New Guinea’s Police Minister, Robert Atiyafa, spoke about the ailing state of police during the opening of the new Lae Metropolitan Building funded by the AFP through the PNG-Australian policing partnership.
“The question has been, what will the government improve the Lae Police force to better serve our people and our investors in Lae?” said Minister Atiyafa.
Lae policemen and women have the difficult task of policing PNG’s fastest growing city, despite living in squalid conditions, facing logistic problems and manpower shortages, they continue to provide an essential service.
On January 3rd Minister Atiyafa, personally visited the seven duplexes left incomplete for two years and made calls for an investigation.
Atiyafa says he is still waiting for a report from the police commissioner to initiate investigations into the building of the duplexes.
