Over 23,000 Grade 12 students nationwide have today begun their national examinations.
The exams will continue for two weeks, with the first paper sat being Advanced Mathematics.
EMTV visited Port Moresby National High School this morning to see students sit their first exam.
The school has 269 Grade 12 students, 145 boys and 124 girls.
Port Moresby National High School, which was opened in 1996, is one of the top schools in the country. Last year, over 80 per cent of students were selected into tertiary institutions.
Principal, David Diowai, said the high achievement levels are attributed to good management and knowing what’s needed in the classrooms.
Diowai also made mention that there are 23,000 students nationwide sitting for these exams. However, only about 6,000 to 7,000 students will be able to continue into tertiary education next year.
He said capacity must be increased and more universities must be built to cater for the government’s vision of greater access to education.
In 2014, over 19,800 students sat for their Grade 12 exam. Of these, just over 5,600 went on to tertiary education.
The numbers are staggering, but the government said this year marked a 21 per cent increase in tertiary enrollment compared to last year.
