Governor Parkop and NCDC Aware of Burial Grounds Concerns

By Mickey Kavera – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Concerns on the removal of graves have reached the attention of the National Capital District Commission.

Governor Powes Parkop is aware of the concerns raised by the landowners.

He says, it is a delicate and sensitive issue and NCD is approaching the issue in an appropriate manner.

The removal of 84 graves to make way for a four lane road has become contentious.

Landowners have felt they have been misled by NCDC to exhume the remains of their loved ones.

According to NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, consultation was held with the landowners prior to the road construction.

He says, the road under construction has been there since colonial times.

Formalities to have the road come under NCD began in 1994.

Parkop has asked the landowners to make adjustments to allow for road work to progress.

He says, several business houses and individual families have had to do the same for previous road constructions.

Initial plans of the road were to go by sea but the economics of it did not allow.

As a result the best option was to develop a by-pass.
