The inaugural Huhu War Canoe Festival was held at Maiwara village yesterday with over 1,000 people attending.
Cultural leaders, youths and ward councillors from Huhu, Alotau’s largest local level government which includes the wards Maiwara, Wagawaga, Kilakilana, Gamadoudou, Gabugabuna and inland Yaneyanene had planned the event.
Chairman of the festival KaimuyoniIla said traditionally, war canoes were built for war, not for racing.
The Huhu War Canoe Festival aims to showcase the real culture of war canoes and other associated practices including; preparation, feasting and the launching of the canoes in an authentic village setting.
“Through this event, we are taking ownership of our own culture with a view to re-instilling pride in our cultural heritage especially in our young people and above all, to unite the people of Huhu.”
Minister for National Planning and Implementation and Member for Alotau, Charles Abel, presented a personal cheque for K5,000 cash and K10,000 came from other sponsors during the official launching of the festival.
Milne Bay Estates (New Britain Palm Oil Ltd) also proceeded with ground preparations as part of the company’s contribution.
A total of 11 war canoes were launched yesterday. The two-day show ended today.
