Evicted settlers push for justice

Settlers atthe Arts Centre Settlement have filed a national court reference to haltthe eviction exercise being carrlied out againstthem.

The settlers are now seeking a stay order on humanitarian grounds.

It is day four ofthe eviction exercise atthe Arts Centre Settlement. The settlement has become beatr with trees and houses all brought tothe ground. People sit quietly and watch asthe police set to tasktheir orders.

The settlers saythey have been treated coldheartedly, and are going to challengethe eviction in court.

The eviction began last week Friday when police flashed a court order instructingthem to vacatethe land immediately.

Settlers saythey were surprised that an eviction was being carrlied out asthere was no prior warning. Many had to burn whatthey could not take asthey were given little time to evacuate.

The locals have requested an audience withtheir local member Labi Amaiu, and also NCD Governor Powes Parkop.

They saythey will pursuethe matter in court no matter whatthe cost.
