The annual East New Britain Regional Governor’s Cup may not be as popular as the Digicel Cup, but it is one that brings athletes together from all over the province.
The four-day sporting event will begin on Wednesday and see touch rugby, softball and volleyball athletes heading to the provincial capital in Kokopo.
East New Britain Governor, Ereman ToBaining Jr, and Regional member, Leo Dion, made assurances to continue funding the event as an avenue to help develop not only sporting talent, but to support its provincial youth development program.
K50,000 has been pumped into financing this year’s event as cash prizes for the winning teams.
20 teams have registered across the respective codes, but organisers say that number might change as more teams are expected to register.
This is the 16th year of the annual Regional Governor’s Cup following its inception in 2000.
The games will begin on Wednesday morning and will end on Saturday this week at the Takubar sports grounds in Kokopo.
