The Lae District Court has refused bail for the two Madang Urban Local Level Government (MULLG) councillors and six others, who were arrested for being in possession of drugs last week Thursday.
The magistrate said he was not satisfied with the information presented in court today, and made a ruling that the bail granted over the weekend be set aside due to irregularities in the process.
The two newly elected councillors namely Ismael Yama (Ward 7) and Mathew Madelar (Ward 6) were apprehended by police in Lae, after being found in possession of drugs, along with six other men.
Apart from the drugs found stashed in the vehicle, police report state that drugs, an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition, and a phone with pornographic images were found in one of the councilors waist bag.
The defendants counsel told the court today that the firearm was licensed.
The magistrate said bail can still be considered, and has instructed the counsel to file a proper bail application with guarantors.
The case has been adjourned to Wednesday the 14th of August. The eight men are currently being remanded at the Buimo Prison in Lae.
