Angau’s New Wards

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

Lae’s Anagu Hospital will be using two new wards that have been built under a partnership program with the Australian government.

It comes following the ongoing improvements that Angau hospital continues to carry out in its 10-year re-development plans.

The opening of the new wards is part of Angau’s 10 year development plan that involves the refurbishment and construction of new hospital buildings.

By 2016, construction will begin on the first lot of new buildings for the new Angau hospital.

These wards although new, will provide temporary relief for the hospitals operations until the construction begins.

Inside, the beds and cubicle are placed in an air-conditioned room.

This successful project has been the result of Angau hospital’s partnership with the Australian government.

Angau Hospital CEO, Dr. Christopher Kenyhercz, said the hospital has other bigger plans of expanding its facilities.

“Now we’re working with not only the governments of Papua New Guinea, but also the governmnets of Australia, in the province,” Dr. Kenyhercz said.

Three years ago, Angau was a hospital in crisis.

Termites were eating up the buildings and patients were sleeping on the corridors.

It took some political will and high-level intervention from the Prime Minister before things started moving.

Angau Hospital continues to be Lae’s central hospital that caters for patients from within the city as well as from rural areas within Morobe.

With the increase in daily patients comes the demand for quality health services.

Today’s new ward opening highlights a development plan that Angau hospital has in place for its patients and staff for the next ten years.
