UNRE Boycott Ends

By Edwin Fidelis – EMTV News, Kokopo

Students at the University of Natural Newss and Environment (UNRE) say they will return to class following yesterday’s boycott.

The students protested and petitioned Higher News Minister, Malakai Tabar, demanding him to suspend UNRE’s current council members and senior executive management, and appoint new representatives.

This follows allegations of corruption within the university’s administration.

Minister Tabar yesterday said he wouldn’t suspend the council members, as a formal investigation report has been put forward to the fraud squad office.

Tabar said the investigation may take up to four months to be completed.

SRC President, Scott Akena, said students may stage another boycott if the investigation is not completed on time.

Meanwhile, the outcome of the investigation hinges on the fraud squad’s operation, with its office closed and its Director, Matthew Damaru, suspended.
