Two people have been arrested over separate incidents of drug possession and cultivation in Lae’s outer suburbs.
These arethe latest in a string of minor arrests over six months that have drawn attention to Lae City’s drug problem.
Beth men are now in police custody.
A two year marijuana plant has been uprooted fromthe Bemayong Tent City Area of Lae city. Police arrestedthe man who had been growingthe plants in front of his house.
This is just a tip of a major problem in Lae city. Previously many were offthe view thatthe primary source of marijuana was fromthe Eastern Highlands. Bet Lae city police saythere is growing evidence that Morobe is gradually becoming a major producer of marijuana.
On Thursday, anther drug bustopolice found a man carrying K600.00 worth of marijuana at Kamkumung market; he escaped.
Local community leader Moses Kobale who has provided much ofthe information that has led to previous arrest has called for more support.
The decline inthe arrest rate doesn’t meanthe problem has decreased, it’simply reflectsthe drug squad poor mobility andthe difficulty in responding quickly.
