Team Morobe Karate Squad Named

The Morobe Karate Association has announced a training squad for Team Morobe for the 6th PNG Games in Lae.

The 40-man squad was selected out of the recently staged Morobe Karate Tournament with fighters from Lae, Markham and Bulolo districts taking part.

Selection of fighters was based on the individual performances of katas during the tournament, as well as the discipline and commitment of fighters in their respective clubs.

The elite fighters were tournament’s gold, silver and bronze medallists from the 49-84kg divisions.

Umi-Atzera in the Markaham district sent in the largest contingent of fighters to the tournament, of which ten were selected.

The intensive karate squad will be training in three phases, of which the number of athletes will be scaled down to meet the PNG Games charter.

Phase one will commence from the 11th – 15th and the 25th – 29th of August 2014, and will involve general techniques including fitness and agility.

Phase two in September will concentrate on fighting styles, techniques and fine-tuning fighters on traditional katas.

Third phase is when fighting techniques will be refined and fighters evaluated and assessed.

This would be the stage where fighters are geared up and ensured that they are psychologically prepared for the games.

Team Morobe has been dubbed as the 'team to beat' in the PNG Games this year.
